Taoism maintains that Tao is the essence of the universe, as well as the law of the evolution and change of everything and anything. Tao contains everything and is omnipresent. The Book of Purity and Tranquility says: “The Great Tao has no form; it brings forth and raises heaven and earth. The Great Tao has no feelings; it regulates the course of the sun and the moon. The Great Tao has no name; it raises and nourishes the myriad beings.” On the Mysterious Matrix (Xuangang Lun 玄纲论) says: “Tao is rooted in a void, is the cause of the universe, the essence of divinity, and the origin of heaven and earth…

It is on the basis of Tao that all beings survive and the Five Elements are formed.” Tao
contains everything in the world, both material and spiritual.

In Thick Black Theory Li Zongwu talks about there being 3 different levels of power. There’s a low, middle and upper level.

Thick Black Theory is really, more than anything is the lower level of power.

The Four quadrants are actually the upper level of power.

The Lower Level

The lowest level of power is called the way of savages. This is the way of brutes, the way of violent people, the way of thieves, manipulators, and so on.

At this level what you’re basically doing is using violence, coercion and treachery to gain power, to impose your will on others, and so on.

A lot of the material that’s out there relative to power – Machiavelli, Nietzsche Even some of the more modern stuff like the 48 laws of power – All of this stuff is the lowest level of power – The Tao of Savagery.

What that material really teaches you to do is gain the world by losing your soul, and that’s really the opposite of what you’re wanting to be focused on.

We don’t want to be focused on this low level way of power. It does work – If you want to be a brute, a savage, a violent liar, cheat, or thief to gain power, that will work. But there are consequences and payments that have to be made for that type of action.

I’ll talk more about that in the section on gaining and losing, but suffice it to say that you can get power with the Tao of Savagery but it comes at a very expensive price.

The Middle Level

This is the Tao of human society. The way of human society. A good example of this would be some of the material that’s been written by Cialdini, such as “Yes” and “Influence”.

This is just the level at which normal people attain some type of success and influence.

The Upper level

Finally we have the highest level of power – the way of saints and sages.

That’s what you’re learning now in the four quadrants of power.

The benefit of learning the highest level of power is that you can literally gain the world without losing your soul.

It’s much more powerful than the middle or lower levels, you’ll get much more, and generally – there is no price to pay if you understand the theory at a higher level.

So those are the overall 3 levels of power. The way of savages, the way of humanity, and the way of saints and sages.

We’re focused on the way of saints and sages in the four quadrants of power.

I highly advise that you stay away from the lower levels, as they’re very dangerous and you could get a lot of things you might not expect or want.

I believe that as time is going by, and you’re realizing exactly what it is that I’m teaching you, that this level of power is where you’re wanting to operate permanently.

The Tao Te Ching says, “Man follows the way of earth. Earth follows the way of heaven. Heaven follows the way of Tao, and Tao follows the way of spontaneity.”

The “spontaneity” or “naturalness” refers to the status of things being spontaneous with no interference from outside elements.

This spontaneity is the most important feature of Taoism.

Whether in nature or human society, everything has to follow Tao or follow its own nature.

It should never be changed by outside forces. How is this spontaneity to be realized instead of being opposed?

The method put forward by Taoism is “non-interference” or “non-action”. “Non-interference” does not mean taking a passive approach or doing nothing at all. Rather, it means following spontaneity without mixing in any of one’s own subjective thinking or selfishness.

One must follow the intrinsic nature and law of development of all beings, taking appropriate action in response to objective conditions in order to act in the manner of “non-action.”

Ability to lead his army

Something that often gets overlooked is the need to employ others in the execution of your plan. This is one of the highest leverage factors in executing a plan.

We only have 24 hours in a day. In order to achieve maximum effectiveness, it is absolutely necessary to utilize the talents of others. You must learn how to lead and manage the group of people working on the execution of the plan.

Whenever one mobilizes the army it takes the
commanding general as its fate. Its fate lies
in a penetrating understanding of all aspects,
not in clinging to one technique. In accord
with there abilities assign duties, each one
taking charge of what they are good at,
constantly changing and transforming with
the times, to create the essential principles
of order. Thus the general has seventy-two
“legs and arms” and “feathers and wings” in
order to respond to the way of Heaven.

Taoism stresses the value of life and teaches people to treasure and enjoy life.

It believes that, by practicing the “integrated cultivation of character and life,” one can attain longevity and immortality.

Xiang’er’s Commentary on “The Book of Lao Zi” says, “Life is another form of Tao.” Here, “life” (sheng 生) means growth, existence and survival, which are all manifestation of Tao.

Tao gives birth to all beings.

Tao goes together with life. Life and Tao protect each other. This is the basic belief of Taoism.

As long as one is able to cultivate Tao and preserve his health, to settle his essence and consolidate his body, he will have longevity, attain Tao and become a deity.

The basic principle for cultivation is the integrated cultivation character and life.

The cultivation of character refers to the cultivation of one’s nature and morality. The cultivation of life refers to the cultivation of one’s bodily life. The standard for the cultivation of character is learning and cultivating the morality prescribed by Taoist tradition, remaining tranquil and complying with nature, being supple and weak and never fighting for any personal gain, expelling any selfish desire, slighting fame and gain, and not being troubled by secular material needs, so as to be engrossed in cultivation.

At the same time, one must do gooddeeds, help others and accumulate one’s merits. The cultivation of one’s bodily life means primarily the preservation of one’s essential matter, vital breath and spirit, keeping fit and living a long life by practicing Taoyin(bodybuilding exercises), the visualization of keeping in oneness, and discoursing on sitting in oblivion (seated meditation), embryonic breathing and outer and inner alchemy.

Taoism teaches that one’s bodily life may be extended through cultivation, that one’s spiritual life may be distilled and one may eventually reach the stage of being immortal.

Taoists believe that too much raw food creates internal weakness from too much cold energy in the center of the stomach.

Overcooked food is also avoided. Stir frying is recommended because the food cooks quickly and the flavors are sealed in with oil. Steaming is preferred over boiling because it conserves more of the nutrients.

What To Eat

Increase intake of the following: Decrease intake of the following:
  • Whole grains and products made with them.
  • Vegetables, ideally organic and seasonal.
  • Fruit, but not tropical. Dried fruit is very good.
  • Seeds and nuts.
  • Tofu and soya.
  • Herbs
  • Herbal and china tea
  • Red meat (hard to digest)
  • Refined products such as white sugar, flour and bread.
  • Tropical fruits (very acidic)
  • Artificial additives of all kinds – ‘eat only food’.
  • Dairy products and cheese.
  • Drugs – including caffeine, alcohol and nicotine.
  • Cold drinks and foods.
  • Strong spices and chilli
  • Deep fried food
  • Sugar
