To achieve success in anything, your actions must accord with Heaven’s Mandate, morals and the seasons of Heaven and Earth.

The Way is how things should actually be done. It is the way you can return to the foundation and return to the beginning.

Righteousness is ethical behavior. It is the means by which to achieve great things.

Strategy is the way to keep harm away and gain benefits.

Principles are the way to preserve duty and keep achievements.

If your behavior doesn’t accord with the Way and righteousness, but dwells in magnificence and enjoys power, disaster will find you in the end.

So the Tian Zi runs things according to the Way, manages things with righteousness, orders people with propriety and leads with kindness.

Cultivate these 4 virtues and you will flourish. Neglecting them will lead to your decline.

Benevolence Is The Only Basis For Attaining Immortality

Taoism lays great stress on a person’s moral development and regards virtue as an important benchmark for measuring a person.

It teaches that only those who have attained virtue may be able to cultivate themselves into becoming immortal.

The inner Book of Master Baopu says, “Anyone who longs to become immortal should have attained the virtues of loyalty, filial piety, kindliness, spontaneity, benevolence and trustworthiness. Anyone who has not cultivated his virtue but only practiced necromancy will not achieve immortality.”

Holding virtue in high esteem and emphasizing the teaching of ethics are important features of Taoism.

The Book of Supreme Peace says, “A deity is one who never does evil. If each treasures his life, this is evidence of benevolence.” Xiang’er’s Commentary on “The Book of Lao Zi” says that any who wishes to become immortal “must cultivate himself in a myriad of ways and do a myriad of good deeds.”

As you’re becoming more successful in each of the Four quadrants of power – the mental quadrant, the structural quadrant, the martial quadrant and the social quadrant you must constantly lower the resistance to your becoming more and more powerful.

If you wish to truly lower the resistance to your becoming more powerful you should abandon:

  • Lust
  • Anger
  • Greed
  • Arrogance
  • Overjoy

And you should be limiting or controlling your senses of:

  • Sound
  • Touch
  • Color
  • Flavor

Whoever Doesn’t Abandon And Control Their Resistance Will Soon Perish Even If They Have The Whole Earth.

Taoism has a resounding slogan: “My life is in my own hands, not heaven’s.”

The length of one’s life is just determined by heaven but is in one’s own hands.

Taoism teaches the firm belief that man is able to overcome natural hazards and enable his life to grow from weak to strong and from death to life and ultimately to become immortal through active cultivation. It opposes the attitude of non-action or apathy toward death. It admits that “there is life, so there must be death,” but regards this as one result of the course of natural evolution. However, such a course of evolution can be reversed and death can be avoided through one’s initiative.

A famous Taoist tenet says, “If you go along with it, you will remain a man. If you go against it, you will become a deity.”

For centuries, generations of Taoists have striven to experiment again and again and to practice outer alchemy and inner alchemy in the quest to achieve the goal of immortality.

The Principle of Speed

This refers to swiftness in execution. A plan is useless unless it is executed. However, it is also important how it is executed. One of the primary principles in execution is speed.

This is in sharp contrast to the views on planning, which support thoroughness and attention to detail. This thoroughness naturally tends to take some time. But once the plan is formalized it needs to be executed expediently. Speed of execution ensures that the plan actually gets done and doesn’t just sit on the “back burner”.

If one sees good but is dilatory in doing it; if
the time for action arrives and one is doubtful;
if you know something is wrong but you
sanction it—it is in these three that the way
stops.

Also, in a directly competitive situation, if the plan isn’t executed swiftly, it could be leaked or offer the enemy a chance to read your movements and start preparing counter-measures. Speed in execution will give the added advantage of surprise and capitalize on the enemy’s lack of preparation.

If your plans are heard about, the enemy will
make counterplans. If you are perceived,
they will plot against you. If you are known
they will put you in difficulty. If you are
fathomed, they will endanger you.

Speed is the essence of war. Capitalize on
the unpreparadness of the enemy; travel by
unexpected routes; and attack those places
where he does not take precautions.

Generally speaking, religions often draw people’s attention to the netherworld and have designed various plans for souls to be rescued or to ascend to heaven after death.

They pay little attention to the quality of practical life or to how life can be extended. But Taoism is quite different. It emphasizes reality, human life and the physical body and it actively explores how to lengthen human life.

“The Book of Changes” says, “The greatest virtue in heaven and on earth is life.” and “Life is another form of Tao.”

Taoism teaches that the reason life is so important is that a person can have only one life.

“Everyone has one life, which will never be reborn,” says the Book of Supreme Peace. So Taoists oppose regarding life as the victim of secular desire, oppose trading life for fame and gain, and oppose blindly subjecting life to man-made political logic.
